Diederik Maessen to join Van Doorne's Energy, Industry & Renewables practice

29 September 2022

Diederik Maessen has been appointed energy projects partner in Van Doorne’s Energy, Industry & Renewables practice starting on 1 October 2022. This will reinforce Van Doorne’s leading position as a legal services provider in the energy sector.

Saskia Laseur, managing partner, says: ‘Several years ago we expressed our ambition to become a leading firm in the Dutch and international energy sector. The addition of Diederik Maessen ensures that Léone Klapwijk, Hugo Reumkens, Rogier Schellaars, together with Victor van Ahee and Deborah Nizamoeddin (also effective 1 October) can take a huge step forward to provide full service to our energy clients. So we have a great energetic team!

Diederik will be joining Van Doorne after 15 years at De Brauw, where he was counsel in recent years. He specialises in the development, financing, construction and purchase and sale of large-scale energy and infrastructure projects, having a proven track record in the field. His focus is mainly on emerging technologies (such as hydrogen and CCS) and sectors such as renewable energy, oil and gas, LNG, ports and terminals and nuclear. Major clients include sponsors and developers, infrastructure and energy funds, governments and state shareholdings. As a lawyer, he has been involved in some of the largest and most high-profile energy projects in the Netherlands.

Clients describe Diederik as enthusiastic, solution-oriented, driven, legally rock solid and a true team player. A recent quote from a client in Chambers Insights 2022, Energy and Natural Resources: ‘Diederik had a key role in the process. Coordinating, leading teams, aligning with other law firms and providing legal advice. He did a very good job.’

Diederik himself says: ‘I am really looking forward to starting at Van Doorne. The energy market is undergoing a lot of change, with challenges and opportunities for every party in the value chain. Van Doorne is strongly committed to further expanding its energy practice and has all the resources to provide proper support to clients throughout the life of an energy project. It already has a rock-solid multidisciplinary team and I’m very happy to be joining it. What also appeals to me is Van Doorne’s entrepreneurial focus and client-oriented approach.’

Léone Klapwijk (team president of Energy, Industry & Renewables) says: ‘We are delighted to be welcoming Diederik to Van Doorne’s energy sector team. Built up over the last few years , the team assists clients with complex issues. We focus exclusively on energy matters, taking an approach that is integrated and cross-jurisdictional. As well as producing cost-efficiency benefits for clients, this also enables us to provide watertight solutions for clients. Diederik will reinforce our M&A/corporate, (project) financing and construction expertise in energy projects. Not unimportantly, he will also be an excellent fit on a personal level, both on the team and within Van Doorne as a whole. We look forward to working with Diederik and to furthering our ambition to make Van Doorne the number one  energy firm in the Netherlands.
