Van Doorne significantly expands 'Financial Litigation' team

23 January 2024

With the arrival of Ralph Ubels, Tomas Klerks and Charlotte Groot Rouwen, Van Doorne’s Financial & Insolvency Litigation has been substantially expanded. This further fulfills Van Doorne’s ambition to become the leading litigation firm in the Netherlands. It also strengthens Van Doorne’s proposition to support financial institutions as a leading sector specialist. Ubels will become a partner at Van Doorne and was previously a partner at NautaDutilh. Klerks and Groot Rouwen are senior associates who also worked at NautaDutilh before joining Van Doorne.

Financial institutions are increasingly facing liability issues. Ralph Ubels has been assisting banks, insurers and accounting firms in complex financial disputes for many years. His expertise dovetails seamlessly with that of Joost Volkers and his colleagues, who have extensive experience in handling insolvency-related disputes and restructurings in addition to the financial litigation practice.

Managing partner Sjoerd Kamerbeek of Van Doorne: ‘In recent years we have expanded our litigation practice with the ambition of becoming the leading litigation firm in the Netherlands. To achieve that goal, we have recruited Daan Beenders (commercial litigation and class actions) and Neyah van der Aa (sanctions law), among others. Internal partner appointments such as those of Vanessa Liem (research and business conduct) and Joost Volkers (Financial & Insolvency Litigation) are also part of this objective. Ralph’s arrival will enable us to realize our ambitions even better. We are very happy with his arrival.”

Ralph Ubels himself says of his move: “It is with great pleasure that I begin this new adventure. Van Doorne has one of the largest litigation teams in the Netherlands. I already notice the great synergy between the different litigation groups. I look forward to working with Joost Volkers and all other colleagues at Van Doorne to assist financial institutions at the highest level in handling the disputes they face now and in the future.”
