Diederik Maessen

Diederik is a partner in Van Doorne’s Corporate and Projects groups, with a focus on the energy,  infrastructure and industry sectors. He has over 18 years of experience in M&A transactions, project development and complex contracts.

Diederik has advised on a range of oil and gas, LNG, solar, (offshore and onshore) wind, CC(U)S, hydrogen, (battery) storage, nuclear, ports & terminals, data centers and chemicals transactions and projects. His clients include leading industrial parties, developers, sponsors, funds and state-owned enterprises. Diederik has particular expertise in acting as project counsel.

Diederik is recognized by Chambers as a leading energy & natural resources transactions lawyer.

Before joining Van Doorne, Diederik spent 15 years at De Brauw Blackstone Westbroek, including 2.5 years at their (former) office in Beijing. He has been on secondments with Slaughter and May in London and Hong Kong and with Vopak’s global LNG team.

Experience

Recent matters include acting for:

  • Vopak, Gasunie, Shell and TotalEnergies as project counsel on the development of the Co2next project, a liquid Co2 import terminal being developed in the Rotterdam Port Area as part of the Aramis CCS value chain;
  • Vopak Ventures on the equity and debt financing and development of Xycle’ first commercial-scale plastics recycling plant;
  • an international oil & gas company on its bid for the offshore NAM assets;
  • Hynetwork Services on the development of its Dutch national hydrogen backbone;
  • Gate LNG terminal on various contracting and regulatory matters;
  • Gasunie and Vopak as project counsel on Vopak’s acquisition of a 50% interest in the EemsEnergy LNG terminal;
  • Port of Rotterdam in respect of its Rotterdam Shore Power joint venture with Eneco;
  • Vopak on the acquisition of a 50% stake in Zuidwending BESS, a battery energy storage system developer, from Corre Energy;
  • Hydrogenious and Vopak as project counsel on their joint venture for hydrogen storage, transport and supply based on Hydrogenious’ LOHC technology;
  • Port of Rotterdam, Gasunie and EBN as project counsel on the development of the Porthos CC(U)S project in the Rotterdam Port Area;(*)
  • Ørsted on the approximately EUR 1.375 billion sale of a 50% interest in the Borssele 1 and 2 offshore wind farms to NIBM; (*)
  • Ørsted on its bid for the Hollandse Kust Zuid 3 +4 tender; (*)
  • PALLAS on the procurement, construction and financing of a new nuclear reactor and nuclear health centre in Petten, the Netherlands; (*)
  • a leading international infrastructure fund on its bid to acquire a stake in the Hollandse Kust zuid offshore wind farms; (*)
  • Vopak as lead counsel on various international greenfield and brownfields transactions, including on the acquisitions of stakes in FSRU based LNG import terminals in Colombia and Pakistan. (*)
